Why there is a lack of understanding the KDE4 Release Schedule?

KDE

With every new KDE4 release (current KDE 4.1 alpha1), there will be a lot of controversy at news pages here in germany about the Release Schedule. I think in other countries it's the same. A lot of peoples doesn't understand that KDE 4.0 is an important release and KDE goes the right way. KDE 4.0 is not designed for endusers, but it is a kool base for beginn to port KDE3 applications to KDE4 or build new KDE4 applications.

That's allways known but what are the effects of this Schedule? What is done since the KDE 4.0 release in january until now?

  • A lot of projects work to port his applications to KDE4. Examples:
    • Amarok: more about the development ... [CLICK]
    • Digikam: more about the development ... [CLICK]
  • Many optical increments and plasmoids already available at KDE-Look.org:
  • Around 50 KDE4 applications are at this time available at KDE-Apps.org. Examples:
    • KDVDCreator: Application to create video VCD, SVCD or DVD.
    • K9copy: Allows full or partial copy of a DVD9 to a DVD5.
    • Blokkal: A KDE blogging client.
    • aKu: The RAR GUI application for KDE4.
    • KRename: Krename offers an easy way to rename hundreds of files in one go.
    • et cetera

I hope this small listing show you that KDE 4.0 is an important release. With this step KDE can ensure that a lot of themes, plasmoids and applications are available when KDE 4.1, the first KDE4 release which is designed for endusers, released in july this year.

KDE 4 rocks

Best DE ever.

Will there be an alternative to Kickoff, however?

I consider Kickoff to be a user interface disaster. Will there be any alternative, or shall I get ready to switch to Xfce?

RE: Will there be an alternative to Kickoff, however?

Yes, there is already a plasmoids like the old KDE3 menu and two other are in development.

Plasmoids

I think, it would help a lot to distribute plasmoids right now - in some KDE4 PPA. Especially Quicklauncher and Coremoid are quite stable and of great use. I've already packaged the 8 most importand Plasmoids in my ppa. But maybe, there should be some "semi-official" PPA to do so. For anyone interessted so far, just add "deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/cornelius-maihoefer/ubuntu hardy main" to your source.list.

Cheers.

RE: Plasmoids

Hi Cornelius,

Coremoid still exists in my PPA includes the icon fix.

"deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/czessi/ubuntu hardy main"

Easy. 4.0 implies, nay

Easy. 4.0 implies, nay screams, that it's a full-fledged release meant for everybody. No other project in existence uses the same numbering as KDE.

4.0rc had been acceptable. 3.99 or 4.0beta or 4.0dev or whatever too.

And no, it's not only marketing, it's conventions. I get the feeling that it was named 4.0 is about marketing, though... whatever other reason might there be to adopt a numbering schema, that given every other project in existence, is sure to cause this exact confusion? I mean, come on. It's obvious.

dot zero is generally considered ready

The reason the KDE release schedule is confusing is that most other software releases call their dot zero releases a finished, end user appropriate, polished release. KDE being an exception to the rule is totally cnfusing. If KDE did the sensible 'standard' thing then the different strategy wouldn't need to come equipped with an explanation.

"KDE 4.0 is not designed for

"KDE 4.0 is not designed for enduser"

I certainly didn't get that impression when the KDE crowd was in an uproar that Kubuntu 8.04 wasn't going to have a 4.0 official release.

RE: "KDE 4.0 is not designed for

OK, I think Enduser is the wrong word for that what I will say. It's better when I say: "KDE4 is not for Users you need a perfect DE like KDE3".

Thanks for clarifying that.
